Historic First EVAR at SIUT

SIUT has successfully performed its first Endovascular Aortic Repair (EVAR) on 14th May 2026 in the new hybrid theatre at Maryam Bashir Dawood Children Hospital Building, with support from the Cardiothoracic team led by Dr. Babar Hasan.
The procedure was done on a 47-year-old post-renal transplant patient with a high-risk 8.1 cm infrarenal aortic aneurysm and EF 25-30%, making open repair unsuitable. The team successfully deployed the stent graft while preserving both native and transplanted renal vessels.
Led by the SIUT and SMBB Institute of Trauma Karachi Vascular Surgery teams, with support from Cardiothoracic Surgery, Anesthesia, Radiology, and mentored by Prof. Ziad Sophie. Operating team included Drs. Fahad Tariq Berlas, Adeel Zafar, Ghulam Ali, Nadeem Ahmed, Areeba Salim, and Irfan Tariq.
EVAR is a minimally invasive alternative to open surgery, reducing risk, blood loss, and recovery time for high-risk patients.
A major milestone for advanced, free vascular care at SIUT. Congratulations to the entire team.
