Dr. Farhat Moazam, MD, Ph.D

Dr. Moazam is Professor and Founding Chairperson of the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC), SIUT of the Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) in Karachi, Pakistan. She is an American board certified pediatric surgeon with an MA in Bioethics and a Doctorate in Religious Studies (2004) from the University of Virginia, USA.
Her areas of interest include bioethics education and research exploring the influence of local values and norms in shaping the ethics of clinical practice. Dr. Moazam has authored articles in journals including Journal of Clinical Ethics, The Hastings Center Report, Asian Bioethics Review, Bioethics and the Journal of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies. Her doctoral dissertation was published (2006) by Indiana University Press with the title Bioethics and Organ Transplantation in a Muslim Society: A Study in Culture, Ethnography, and Religion.
Dr. Moazam has served on many national and international committees and was member, Board of Directors of the International Association of Bioethics (2009-2014). She has collaborated with WHO on multiple projects including updating guidelines for ethical transplantation of human organs and tissues. She was recently a member of the WHO Ebola Ethics Working Group that formulated ethical guidelines for global epidemics.
In 2022, Dr. Moazam was awarded the Hastings Center Bioethics Founders’ Award for her “accomplishments as a pediatric surgeon, educator, ethicist, ethnographic researcher and institution builder.”

Dr. Anwar Naqvi, MBBS, MS (Urology), FCPS, MHPE

Professor Anwar Naqvi, the Provost of Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) is a Urologist and Transplant Surgeon. He has been the President of the International Society of Organ Donation and Procurement and the Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation, Vice President of the Pakistan Association of Urological Surgeons (PAUS), and Secretary General of the Transplantation Society of Pakistan. He was also the Secretary General of the Asian Society of Transplantation and a member of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group. He has contributed to over 150 publications in internationally indexed journals in addition to five book chapters. In view of his contributions to the field of Urology and Transplantation, he was bestowed the highest Civil Award “Sitara-e-Imtiaz” of Pakistan in 2001.

Dr. Aamir M. Jafarey, FCPS, FRCS, MBE

Dr. Aamir Jafarey joined CBEC in October 2004 after training in bioethics as a Fogarty Fellow in the Department of Population and International Health, Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Jafarey has been involved in bioethics-related activities in Pakistan since 1997. He has conducted several research projects and has published in national and international journals. He has been invited to present papers and conduct workshops at various institutions nationally and across the region. Dr. Jafarey is also a Co-Director of the NIH-funded CBEC-KEMRI Bioethics Training Initiative (CKBTI) through which a bioethics education program has been developed and initiated in Kenya.

Dr. Bushra Shirazi is working at SIUT as a general surgeon and is also a faculty member at the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture, SIUT.
Dr. Shirazi, in addition to her post-graduation in general surgery, has a Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Ethics (2007) and MBE (2011) from the Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Karachi, and a Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) from Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi.
As a surgeon, her area of interest is breast and colorectal surgery. In the field of ethics, it is mainly in the area of clinical and research ethics. Dr. Shirazi has served on multiple ethics review committees, including Ziauddin University and Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT). She is currently the Chair of the ERC at SIUT.
She served on the Curriculum Adaptation Committee of the CBEC-KEMRI Bioethics Training Initiative in Nairobi, Kenya, a program funded by a grant from the Fogarty International Center, NIH.
Dr. Shirazi is actively involved in CBEC educational programs including national workshops and seminars. She has presented several papers at national and international bioethics-related conferences. She has served as Vice President (West Asia) of the Asian Bioethics Association, and is also a member of the Karachi Bioethics Group (KBG).

Dr Nida Wahid Bashir is a Consultant Breast and General Surgeon at Dr. Ziauddin Hospital, Clifton Campus, Karachi, Pakistan. Before joining as a part-time faculty in 2023, she had a long association with the Center of Biomedical Ethics and Culture as a PGD student (2010-11) as well as an Associate Faculty since 2015. She is also an Associate Faculty member at CBEC KEMRI-Bioethics Training Initiative, Kenya. She is also a Reviewer at the Journal of Pakistan Medical Association.
Her prime areas of interest are Medical Error, Organizational Ethics, and Public outreach. She has been facilitating ethics sessions and workshops nationally and internationally. Her published work includes a Book Chapter, “Clinical Ethics – Text, Context, and Economics” by Nida Wahid and Bushra Shirazi in Bioethics in Pakistan – Local Context, Local Cases by Lightstone Publishers, Karachi Bioethics Group Booklets “ Ethical Guidelines for Physician Pharmaceutical Interaction” and “Understanding Medical Error” as well as articles in laypress about bioethical issues. She is also the founding member of Karachi Bioethics Group (KBG).

Ms. Sualeha Siddiq Shekhani, BS, MS, MBE

Sualeha Siddiq Shekhani holds an undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from SZABIST (2014), with a major in Psychology. She joined CBEC as a part-timer in March 2015 as a Research Assistant. During this time, she also finished her Master in Health Policy and Management (HPM) from Aga Khan University, Karachi, and her MBE in Bioethics (2019) from the Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS), Karachi.
Her work interests specifically are situated within the domain of qualitative research. She has published papers in the area of bioethics, and intersection of social sciences and health during her time at the centre. Her work at the Centre involves teaching and administrative activities. She also teaches sessions related to ethical issues in social sciences research in Nairobi, Kenya as part of CBEC-KEMRI Bioethics Training Initiative (CK-BTI).
She is a member of Ethical Review Committees of Ziauddin University, Karachi and SIUT, Karachi. In September 2022, she was elected as the member of the Research Ethics Committee of National Bioethics Committee, the central regulatory for ethics approval in the country. She is also a core member of the recently formed group, South Asian Bioethics Community (SABC), which consists of early career scholars and researchers in bioethics and related fields within the region.

Farid bin Masood has done an MPhil in Sociology from the University of Karachi and currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Bioethics from the Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS). He has a rich background in teaching Philosophy, Sociology and Theology at various institutions in Karachi. He has published articles in these areas. He has linguistic proficiency in Turkish and Arabic in addition to English and Urdu. He joined CBEC-SIUT in 2021 as a lecturer, bringing with him his experience in the social sciences and philosophy.
