Internal Medicine

The Department of Internal Medicine is a modern, well-equipped, busy, and academically accredited clinical unit of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), Pakistan. The department comprises 30 well-equipped inpatient beds, including 8 High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds. It provides round-the-clock on-call services throughout the week for all patients requiring internal medicine care within the ambit of SIUT.

In addition to inpatient services, the department conducts Internal Medicine outpatient clinics on two full days each week (Wednesday and Friday). It also operates specialized Endocrinology outpatient clinics three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday). The department provides consultation services for medical problems referred from all sister departments within SIUT.

The department manages referrals from other tertiary care hospitals for the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical conditions, particularly patients with renal diseases associated with multisystem medical disorders. It routinely manages challenging cases involving Glomerular diseases, Infectious diseases, Rheumatological disorders, Hematological disorders, Neurological disorders, Endocrine disorders, and other complex medical conditions. The department also provides medical care to SIUT staff and their first-degree relatives.

The ward is equipped with bedside point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) facilities to support prompt diagnosis and patient management. All patient records and clinical documentation are maintained through the Hospital Management Information System (HMIS).

According to the departmental monthly records for June 2026, a total of 147 patients were admitted for inpatient care with acute and subacute medical conditions. These admissions included both new admissions and transfers from other departments, including the Emergency Department. During the same period, 456 patients attended the Internal Medicine outpatient services, including both the Internal Medicine and Endocrinology clinics. From 2021 to June 2026, the Department of Internal Medicine managed a total of 6,831 inpatients and 14,961 outpatients.

The department is equipped according to international standards to provide comprehensive medical care for all patients admitted under its services. It also has a robust postgraduate teaching program and is fully accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) for a four-year residency training program in General Medicine and a two-year residency program leading to the Intermediate Module in Medicine (IMM) for trainees in Medicine and Allied Specialties.
