Nutrition Department

About the Department

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) comprises a team of qualified clinical dietitians dedicated to delivering high-quality, patient-centred nutrition care.

Guided by SIUTs philosophy, we provide compassionate, equitable and individualized nutrition care that respects each patients clinical condition, nutritional needs, social circumstances and financial limitations.

Established in 1993, the department has established expertise in renal nutrition, transplantation, pediatric nutrition, critical care, oncology and advanced nutrition support. As an integral part of SIUTs multidisciplinary healthcare team, dietitians contribute to clinical decision-making and deliver specialized nutrition care for patients with complex medical and surgical conditions throughout their treatment journey, from diagnosis to rehabilitation and long-term follow-up.

Clinical Nutrition Services

The department serves over 300 inpatients and outpatients daily across Nephrology, Urology and Transplantation, Oncology, Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation, Endocrinology and Weight Management, Pediatric specialties, and Intensive Care Units.

The department follows an evidence-informed approach, integrating current scientific evidence, clinical expertise and individual patient needs in nutrition care planning.

Specialized Nutrition Care

As a tertiary care institution, SIUT provides advanced nutrition support for patients with complex medical and surgical conditions. Our expertise includes nutrition management for organ transplantation, critical illness, congenital heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders requiring specialized nutrition support, oncology, and other complex multisystem diseases.

Our services include:

  • Nutrition assessment and diagnosis
  • Individualized medical nutrition therapy
  • Enteral and parenteral nutrition support
  • Body composition analysis
  • Nutrition care for critically ill, transplant and pediatric patients
  • Weight management and lifestyle counselling
  • Palliative nutrition support
  • Nutrition monitoring and follow-up

Tele-Nutrition Services

Recognizing the challenges faced by patients from distant regions and the need for close follow-up, particularly among infants with complex nutritional needs, the department established SIUTs first structured Tele-Nutrition Clinic. This service provides regular virtual follow-up, nutrition counselling and monitoring, enhancing continuity of care while reducing the need for unnecessary travel for patients and families.

Education and Capacity Building

Education and capacity building are central to the departments mission. Our dietitians actively participate in the training of nurses, medical technologists and other healthcare professionals through multidisciplinary teaching and clinical collaboration.

The department is equally committed to developing future clinical dietitians through structured internships and one-year clinical training programmes that provide extensive exposure to high-volume, complex tertiary care cases under expert supervision.

Research and Quality Improvement

The department promotes evidence-informed practice through clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives and participation in research activities. Dietitians also serve on institutional research and ethics committees, supporting responsible research and evidence-based clinical practice.

A data-driven approach is used to monitor nutrition outcomes, evaluate services and drive continuous improvements in patient care.

Community Engagement and Preventive Nutrition

The department recognizes the importance of preventive nutrition in reducing the burden of disease. Through patient education, community outreach, digital platforms and social media, our dietitians promote healthy dietary practices and improve nutrition awareness among patients, families and the wider community.

Our Commitment

The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics remains committed to SIUTs mission of delivering compassionate, equitable and high-quality healthcare. Through individualized nutrition care, multidisciplinary collaboration, education, research and continuous quality improvement, we strive to improve the nutritional health and quality of life of every patient entrusted to our care.
