Equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and operating around the clock, the laboratory performs thousands of diagnostic tests daily while providing all services free of cost.
Department of Chemical Pathology
The Department of Chemical Pathology has transformed into a fully automated, high-throughput diagnostic facility equipped with state-of-the-art analyzers. Innovations include therapeutic drug monitoring for immunosuppressive agents, comprehensive hormonal and tumor marker assays, protein electrophoresis, 24-hour urine metabolic studies, arterial blood gas analysis, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for urinary stone analysis. The department also provides specialized investigations for renal and liver transplant patients, processing over 2,000 samples daily with high accuracy and efficiency.
Department of Haematology and Blood Bank
The Haematology Department has evolved into a modern, fully automated and computerized service providing 24/7 patient care. Advanced innovations include automated coagulation analysis, thrombophilia screening, bone marrow diagnostics, and specialized hematological investigations. The Blood Bank employs gel technology for blood grouping, antibody screening, and compatibility testing, while advanced cell separator technology facilitates single donor platelet collection and therapeutic plasma exchange, ensuring safe and efficient transfusion services.
Department of Microbiology
The Microbiology Department has developed into one of Pakistan's busiest and most comprehensive microbiology laboratories. It provides advanced culture and sensitivity testing, including Vitek for a wide range of clinical specimens, including mycobacterial and fungal cultures, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, infection control surveillance, and environmental microbiological analysis, supporting evidence-based management of infectious diseases.
Department of Molecular Diagnostics
The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is at the forefront of precision diagnostics, utilizing Real-Time PCR, automated nucleic acid extraction systems, GeneXpert technology, and second-generation DNA sequencing. The department offers advanced molecular testing for viral and bacterial infections, viral load quantification, drug resistance genotyping, tuberculosis and COVID-19 diagnosis, and transplant-related infections. It has also served as a national reference laboratory for HIV surveillance and drug resistance testing while conducting pioneering research in molecular medicine.
Department of Transplant Immunology
The Department of Transplant Immunology represents one of the country's most advanced transplant laboratories. Innovative technologies include DNA-based HLA typing, Luminex-based antibody screening and identification, complement-dependent cytotoxicity (CDC) crossmatch, flow cytometric crossmatch, and monitoring of non-HLA antibodies. Advanced immune monitoring using flow cytometry and therapeutic drug monitoring for immunosuppressive agents significantly enhance transplant success. The department also collaborates internationally and provides specialized training for professionals from Pakistan and neighboring countries.
Javed I. Kazi Department of Histopathology
The Histopathology Department integrates advanced morphological and molecular pathology with cutting-edge technologies. It is equipped with automated tissue processors, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, frozen section services, and transmission electron microscopy for comprehensive renal pathology. Recent innovations include the installation of a digital slide scanner and VivaScope, enabling digital pathology and enhancing diagnostic precision. The department is also a leading center for renal and transplant pathology research.
Department of Electron Microscopy
The Department of Electron Microscopy is the only facility in Pakistan providing routine diagnostic electron microscopy for both native renal and renal allograft biopsies. Equipped with both scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), it offers ultrastructural diagnosis of renal diseases and advanced stone analysis. This unique service significantly strengthens SIUT's capabilities in nephropathology and transplant diagnostics while supporting clinical research.
