Cross Section of society pays tributes to Edhi

Glowing tributes were paid to Abdul Sattar Edhi the country's most respected and iconic personality in the world of humanitarian services. Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation arranged a memorial reference at their premises which was largely attended by people from cross section of the society.The speakers who spoke included prominent intellectual and Human Right activist Mr I.A. Rehman, Chairperson of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Zohra Yousuf, Sultana Siddqiui, prominent physicians including Dr Haroon Ahmed and Professor Almani, former Commissioner of Karachi Shafiq-ur-Rehman Piracha and representatives of minority committee including artist Jimmy Engineer, Mazhar Jameel, Professor Kanayya Lal Nag Pal and Zahid Farooq. Sattar Edhi passed away at SIUT after prolonged illness.

Speakers while paying rich tributes to the most revered person of our society saluted him and said Abdul Sattar Edhi name is synonymous with dedicated service to the man kind. They said Edhi revolutionize the concept of social work and charitable activities not only in Pakistan but in many parts of the world. The speakers said Edhi led a life for serving others and he extended services regardless of any nationality, ethnicity or class which is a sharp rebuke to those who divide the society through violence and fear. Speakers recounted the multifarious social work of Edhi under the umbrella of Edhi Foundation which includes free hospital and dispensaries, orphanages, nursing homes, shelter for shelter less and old people and fleet of ambulance service, graveyards and morgues. They also highlighted the most remarkable humanitarian which Edhi Foundation rendered was rehabilitation of abandoned children.

Prof Adib Rizvi, Director SIUT who in his welcome address said Edhi had long association with SIUT and was the first among the 2000 persons who pledged to donate their organs after death. Prof Rizvi said the great humanist and social worker was a humble man who spent the entire life for the service of mankind without any personal gain or benefit.
