Pakistan being a developing country is not only facing shortage of professional nurses but also has underprivileged healthcare system. Various factors are contributing towards the low image of nurses and nursing profession. Therefore, in order to gain respect, dignity and professionalism in nursing profession, nurses need a quality educational and professional regulatory body. Looking at the current situation of nurses in Pakistan, SIUT has decided to uplift nursing profession by establishing School of Nursing in 2006. SIUT is the first leading teaching learning hospital which is currently providing free of cost education in Diploma Nursing Program and Six months Nursing Assistants Program. SIUT School of Nursing started with its first academic program in 2006 with six months training course for Nursing Assistants. Up till now, SIUT has passed 273 Nursing Assistants, who are not only giving holistic care to the patients but are also helping patients in their activities of diaily living.
After its progress, SIUT upgraded its Nursing training by starting General Nursing Diploma Program in 2007, which qualifies students to take the licensure exam of Sindh Nurses Examination Board (SNEB). This enables the graduates to practice as qualified Registered Nurses (RN) in Pakistan and since 2007 SIUT has qualified 90 General Nursing students, which are not only serving SIUT but also in other hospitals of Pakistan.
SIUT is strongly committed for the professional upliftment of nursing profession and considers the profession as an inseparable segment of health care which looks after individuals, families, groups and communities.
