Around 25% of all the patients seen at SIUT are under 18 years of age. Before 2005, all children were managed along with adults by the same team. A dedicated Pediatric medical team was established in November 2005. At SIUT like every other department, all the diagnostics and treatment including all the immune suppressive medications, are provided completely free of cost to every individual with dignity. A 21 bedded Pediatric Nephrology ward handles around 250 admissions every month. A 20 bedded critical care unit which is shared with the adult patients takes care of about 50 critically ill children monthly. A separate floor is designated for all the adult and pediatric Post-transplant patients with daily out- patient services so that these special and immune compromised children with a different spectrum of diseases can be handled effectively. We have about 16,000 registered patients who are being treated for a variety of medical problems. Almost 5000 patients are on regular follow up in our Pediatric Nephrotic Clinic. About 200 children are on maintenance hemodialysis and more than 1000 children have received kidney transplant.
Our team handles all the emergencies of children with kidney diseases round the clock. It offers all the necessary facilities including ventilator support, placement of temporary central lines, emergency hemodialysis, acute peritoneal dialysis, plasmaphresis, and percutaneous renal biopsies. A separate Pediatric Vascular team is dedicated to create A-V fistula and we join hands with our Pediatric Urology team to manage complex urologic issues in children with renal failure and other medical problems. A well equipped and expert Interventional Radiology team helps in dealing with patients with central venous and A-V fistula stenosis. We have qualified Nutritionists who advise regarding appropriate diet to all our patients suffering from a variety of kidney diseases. A state of the art Laboratory and Diagnostic service along with dedicated renal histo-pathologists provide all the necessary tools to help diagnose our patients, so that accurate therapeutic interventions can be taken without any delay. A very strong social service department helps to cater all the social needs of our patient population, majority of who belong to the most underprivileged group of our country.
