Paediatric Nephrology

The 25-bedded Paediatric Nephrology Ward handles nearly 1500 patients every year ranging from newborns to 15 year olds. The Paediatric Nephrology Department offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient nephrology services including evaluation and treatment of different kidney diseases, paediatric critical care services which include ventilatory support, placement of central lines, emergency and maintenance hemodialysis, intermittent peritoneal dialysis. Services for percutaneous renal biopsies, creation of AV Fistula, renal nutritionist and in-patient schooling are also offered.

Social welfare services for the children and their parents are provided in collaboration with SIUT's Social Welfare Department for counseling and services related to hereditary renal diseases.

Over 350 renal transplants in children have been successfully performed at SIUT so far. Comprehensive pre-transplant workup and post-transplant care based on current, international pediatric protocols is provided by the pediatric renal transplant team. In September 2005, SIUT was the first institution in the region to successfully transplant an 18 month old child weighing less than 10 kg; the patient received a kidney from his mother. Everything from the specialized workup, to the transplant surgery and lifelong immunosuppressive medications and follow-up are provided free of cost
