A half-day workshop on native renal biopsy pathology was conducted by the Javed I. Kazi Department of Histopathology, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), as part of continued medical education (CME) on the platform of Pakistan Association of Pathologists (PAP), Karachi Chapter. This was the first of a series of CME activity on behalf of PAP, Karachi Chapter to be continued in future for the benefit of young pathologists.
The facilitators for the workshop were Prof. Muhammed Mubarak and Dr. Shaheera Shakeel, Assistant Professor, from the Histopathology Department of SIUT. The workshop was half-day and included both lectures and interactive case discussions. It was divided into pre-Tea and post-Tea sessions.
The workshop was very well attended and total number of registered participants who attended the workshop was 62. The participants were mostly pathologists from all the teaching hospitals and postgraduate medical centers of Karachi, including Aga Khan University, Liaquat National Hospital, Dow University of Health Sciences, Ziauddin Hospital, PNS Shifa, Indus Hospital, National Institute of Child Health (NICH) and other hospitals. It was conducted in the Jasmine Hall of Hanifa Suleman Dawood Oncology Center (HSDOC) building on 15th July 2019.
The workshop began with recitation of holy Quran followed by brief introduction of the workshop and welcome address by Prof. Anwer Naqvi, Professor of Urology, SIUT. He briefly described the aims and objectives of the CME activity and highlighted the role of SIUT in promoting free education and training at all levels of medical education. This was followed by a lecture on systematic approach to native renal biopsy interpretation by Prof. Dr. Mubarak, Professor and Head of Javed I. Kazi Department of Histopathology, SIUT. This talk focused on non-proliferative disorders of the glomeruli and was followed by interesting renal biopsy case discussions, in which all the attendees participated. Case histories were described by Dr. Shaheera Shakeel from the Histopathology Department and were moderated by Prof. Muhammed Mubarak. Post-tea session again started with lecture by Prof. Dr. Mubarak on the proliferative lesions of the glomeruli. The lecture was followed by more interesting case discussions by Dr. Shaheera Shakeel and Dr. Mubarak. A total of 28 interesting cases were discussed encompassing the wide spectrum of native renal pathology. The participants actively interacted with the facilitators in case discussions.
At the end of the workshop, Prof. Mubarak thanked all the participants of the workshop.
The workshop was awarded 4 CME hours.
