The World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) annually conducts public advocacy and awareness program for which this year the theme is “DIET AND THE GUT”. It is based on the relationship between what we eat and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Keeping in view the importance of this day an hour long seminar was organized by the Department of Hepatogastroenterology, Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), in collaboration with World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO).
Medical experts highlighted the problem concerning disease of the small intestine which called as celiac disease in which patients are intolerant to gluten (protein) resulting in diarrhea, nausea or constipation which lead to malabsorption. Such patient should avoid gluten containing food like wheat, barley and rye for whole life.
Endorsing the call given by World Gastroenterology Organization, the doctors emphasized the one of the problem of community that is irritable bowel syndrome in which in the absence of organic cause patients having abdominal symptoms such as diarrhea, constipation or both which affects their quality of life. And also specific dietary measures which such patients should take to deal with it and hence live a healthy life.
They discussed about food allergy and intolerance and also advised that before using any canned products it is imperative to read the food label and check the ingredients so that one can be protected from food allergies.
The experts discussed about the way of management of gut diseases which can be prevented or even treated with food modification and also stated that we should avoid junk food, and prefer high fiber low calorie diet. In addition they stressed on strict gluten free diet for patients having celiac disease.
