The need to establish a patient's welfare department was first felt in SIUT when the transplant program initiated towards the end of 1985. A team of social welfare officers was already working to look after the dialysis patients who often face issues about social , psychological and family issues. A full-fledged Patients Welfare Department was established in SIUT in April 1986 Social welfare officers who were associated with SIUT strengthened the newly established team. The team which works with the clinical staff helps the patient on a variety of social , economic and professional issues which are often confronted by both dialysis as well as transplanted patients. They provide emotional support to patients and guide them by carrying out supportive counselling.
