Services of Founder of Paeds Nephrology Eulogized

Glowing tributes were paid to an American physician at a memorial meeting here last evening for his pioneering role in bringing a health care system which enabled to save the lives of millions of children in Pakistan.

Dr. William Harmon, Professor of pediatric transplant nephrology at Harvard School of Medical Sciences passed away in Boston recently. Harmon who was often described as a giant in his field played an instrumental role in setting up pediatric nephrology unit at SIUT. The memorial meeting was organized by SIUT to recount his services in Pakistan and role he played in introducing a health facility which offered medical cover to vast population of children suffering from various kidney and other related disorders.

Dr. Harmon a distinguished medical personality in academic and clinical world was better known for designing and successfully implementing several pediatric kidney transplant therapeutic trials, spearheading innovative immune suppression regimens for children.

Speaking on the occasion Professor Adib Rizvi, Director SIUT paid rich tributes to Dr. Harmon and said the late physician who was also the President of the American Society of Transplantation was associated with his institute for past 25 years. During his several visits to Pakistan he offered valuable advisory services in the field of pediatrics. Rizvi declared him as a true friend of Pakistan in general and children in particular as he travelled to this country ignoring travel advisory of his own country. Memorial meeting was largely attended by members of medical profession.
